Outboard tech? Anyone good with motor swaps?

Non MC so off topic. Have a pontoon with a 90 Merc but want to swap to an engine we picked up - 115 Evinrude this is an older boat so no itís not getting a new engine.

The evinrude came with remotes wiring cables etc. but the shift throttle control is older and worn and the shift cable needs replacement.

We like the Merc throttle unit it fits the boat well.

Does anyone sell cables with merc control ends and evinrude engine side connectors?

Iíve pinned out the wiring harness and can easily adapt that to the boat side - other suggestions any universal control cables?

I'd give someplace like Marine Engine or Jamestown a call. I recall seeing throttle cables with threaded ends in a marine store, then in other bins, they had special fittings to fit the cables to various brands of engine.

Evinrude cable ends- LINK
Mercury cable ends- LINK

Should be a matter of getting the right length cable and then a pack of each of the above cable ends.

Is the 115 significantly newer or in better shape than the 90? There's not usually much performance upgrade between the 2, particularly on a pontoon.

They're approximately the same vintage the merc I would call nicer/cleaner the Evinrude is lower hours - however for some reason the Merc 90 has munched the sliding shift dog twice in 50 hours. Its 2 nuts, a bunch of nasty gear lube, a springy retainer around the shift dog, a cross pin, then you can replace the shift dog. But why it keeps cracking it I have no clue - and the guys at the shop where I buy parts are flabbergasted that it hasn't grenaded and blown apart the lower end both times.

Forwards has 6 dog teeth that engage the rear gear in the lower unit, but those 6 are pressed together by the spring force basically "forwards" is the lack of the shift arm pressing inwards on the shaft. Neutral is it pushing somewhat in on the shaft, and reverse is it pushing inwards which forces the 3 reverse dogs into position.

Maybe that spring is weak? Maybe the shimming of the rear gear is incorrect? I am not sure and I plan on doing a deep dive and pulling out the drive shaft so I can get to the rear gear and inspect it.

But the reality is I cannot have this thing hammering in and out of forward gear.

Yep. Never seen one worth an OMC engine on it's best day.

Never heard Merc is junk. Tons of them on our lakes. By far the most popular.

Been dealing with outboards since I was 14, never seen a screaming Merc ever outlast, outdo, or outrun an OMC engine, even a lot of times when the OMC is lower HP. We used to run our stock 75 against 100 hp "black anchors' all the time. 75 vs 100, same boat size, same weight in boat, same prop pitch, whipped them every time. Mercs make a lot of noise, but speed, and holeshot, aren't commensurate with the din produced. IMHO. People buy them 'cause they think they are faster, but I never saw proof of that.
