Gen 2 Star: Tracking poorly with ballast biased towards the bow

Good Morning Crew.

2010 Star - 6.0L: 900lbs piggyback in each rear locker, wake makers front piggyback.

With the stock and PB ballasts full, the boat feels and tracks normally. When we run a 750lb in the center walkthrough to tighten up the wake, the back of the boat becomes squirrely.

Have any of you experienced this, and have a solution? I could run a lighter up front, but I really like the wake shape...

Thanks!
D2

P.S. the few other Stars I rotate through with the same hull don't lighten up when loaded this way... but those are 2005-2007, are MCXs, and likely have different rudder shapes.

Any time we ever ran a 750 in the walkway, we filled up another one right in front of the back seat. Granted this was using the full fly high kit with the 710s rather than 900s. I think the rudders got bigger at some point? I’d make sure yours has the updated rudder.

I'd have to imagine that a 2010 would have the updated rudder... is there a resource on here to see which I would have?

With the extra weight of the bags out back, and the bigger Engine, I'm surprised that I'm getting loose. The other boats I ride on don't have as much weight in the rear lockers because of the smaller MCX's, but their rudders could be longer (Haven't seen them because they are always on the dock).

Tell us more about what you mean when you say the back becomes squirrelly…

Willy,

The steering wheel becomes very light (easily moved) and the inputs don't seem to be directly correlated with the boats movements; its hard to keep the boat moving straight. This causes drivers to drift which can really mess with the wake shape and the line tension.

I'm coming from an 02 star (205v) where if I took my hands off the wheel, the boat would turn. This boat will travel straight on its own, but when we are full of ballast, the riders movement is different to counteract.

Hope this makes sense.

Morning All.

After a week or so of experimenting, I came to the conclusion that my poor tracking (light squirrely rudder) was likely caused by a rudder that was too neutral.

I filed (hand file 4-5 passes) the starboard trailing edge of the rudder with a 45° chamfer that measures a bit less than .125". Boat tracks like it's on rails while still staying neutral when you let go of the wheel.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

Well that's interesting my 2010 x15 doesn't seem to have this issue. But we seem to be heavily weighted in back. I broke the KGB tank so we use the horseshoe 750 bag under the front tanks. Then we use the center tab to clean it up.

Is your bow noticeable lower in front?

Noticeably lower than what?

This generation xstar is so low to the water off plane to begin with, with the additional 1000+ in the bow its barely above the water. Its not a problem unless you have a driver who doesn't know to pay attention.
