I have a V-drive X2 and cannot remove the impeller because of the proximity to the muffler. I just pull the whole water pump off the drive shaft pulley. There are three Allen head bolts and the support. Takes two minutes. Then I can remove the impeller without messing around with paint can openers or vise grips.

Iíve always used 2 Med size flat screwdrivers.
I started putting Marine grease on the inside spines where it connects to the shaft when I install it. This made 1000% easier to get out.

Thanks Matt. Good to know. I have noticed little to no wear on my impellers. However I am pretty new at this. I haven't put mega hours on it, so I have a couple spares at this point. Maybe someone could speak to impeller life expectancy. I am guessing, much better safe than sorry. Much better replacing it while still in one piece. If you have one disintegrate, then you are indeed, sorry.

Replacing my 08's this year for the first time. My 1987's impeller died in 2006. I think they last a while. Always keep a spare and keep an eye on temp of course.

Stay away from petroleum based lubricants since they are not friendly to rubber parts
This may or may not be true. Since I don't put grease/lube/antisieze/soap/WD40/yak butter, on the flexible vanes, I'm not worried about it.

I only grease my shaft.

I was taught if you treat the impeller right the opening will be self lubricated.... I knew that was a lie
