I think the the manual said to use blue loctite. Trying to remember what I used the last time but I'm pretty sure that's what was was recommended by the manufacturer. I've had mine out several times over the years using this and haven't had an issue.

Goneboatin, are you absolutely 100% positive that it is a i/8” dia NPT thread? Could you provide a picture of the part net to a tape measure to verify? The one out of my reliable hub from a 2006 trailer is a 3/8” diameter. Are you sure you’re not describing the size of the hex socket?

With pipe threads the thread designation doesn't match the physical diameter of the threads. 1/8-27 NPT threads have an effective thread diameter of .38". 3/8-18 NPT threads have an effective diameter of .638". So the measured diameter of a 1/8 NPT plug is 3/8".
