Just pull yourself closer to the boat but don't wrap the rope around your hands in case you fall. If you are uncomfortable doing that, tie a fixed loop on the tower end to shorten the rope.

-Also what is your weight?

-What board are you riding? Board surf different on different boat. I can use boards on a X22 that I would not be able to use on a NXT22 wave. If your a beginner your weight should be on the lower end of the the weight range of that board. So if the weight range is 140-190 you need a bigger board if you are 175. Remember bigger board does not mean you have to have a long board, just more volume. Anyone 220 lbs or bigger board selection is way more crucial.

-Play with your port tabs in the 55 to 75% , and center tab around 10% range.

-For grins try empty center/front ballast tank. We did this one time as the ballast pump failed and me being a bigger guy I liked it better that way before I upgraded the rear bags.

I just drive at the moment , my son and wife are about the same weight range 140-160 and we have 2 Boards that will do 200 lbs . both boards are stock , nothing special. If i ever stop buying boats maybe i will be able to upgrade and buy some high end custom ones .
My son can sit in the pocket almost as long as he wants on surf left after tweaking . My wife surfs right , and only once this year as she sprained her ankle awhile back and has been having issues .

2 more weekends and surfing is no problem .
Goofy is stock profile , slow down .2 mph
Surf left , 0 0 30 adjust boat faster or slower depending on how steep you want the wave .

Thats with 3 in the boat + 350lbs lead .

one thing i noticed if you empty tanks while sitting still, all the water doesn't pump out. run the boat 10mph and you get another minute or so of water out of the rear tanks .

I heard something interesting. The 20 surfs better than the larger boats with extra weight. Possibly because the boat tracks differently? Displacement is less but with more weight, then what?
